The National Weather Service (NWS) has launched a two-year demonstration project for the Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS), an on-demand, ensemble-based forecast tool designed to provide earlier and more confident warnings for severe weather. Developed by NOAA’s National Severe Storms Lab since 2009, WoFS offers probabilistic guidance to bridge the gap between watches and warnings, particularly for rapidly evolving storms. The project, led by the NWS Office of Science and Technology Integration, aims to explore WoFS’s operational potential and its integration into the Unified Forecast System (UFS), including cloud HPC deployment. Ongoing efforts will focus on improving utility, operations planning, and building a next-generation, UFS-compatible system.
