EPIC Success at AGU

The Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) recently attended the annual American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting from December 10th-16th in Chicago, IL and engaged the community in a number of EPIC ways. The AGU Fall Meeting is the most influential event in the world dedicated to the advancement of Earth and space sciences with over 25,000 attendees from 100+ counties.

The week kicked off on Saturday, December 10, 2022 with the EPIC Workshop: Running the Unified Forecast System (UFS) Short-Range Weather Application (SRW) in the Cloud. This event taught students (1) how to access the EPIC Sandbox via Amazon Web Services (AWS) using their local devices and (2) how to set up and use the SRW Application. Dr. Yi-Cheng Teng and Dr. Natalie Perlin led participants through a control case and two modified test cases to produce three different forecast outputs and associated forecast graphics plots.

For the event kickoff on Monday, December 12, two EPIC team members, Dr. Stelios Flampouris and Dr. Jong Kim, presented their posters on Building the Community Infrastructure for the Unified Forecast System and Continuous Integration Using Jenkins for the UFS Weather Model Development, respectively. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Dr. Jose-Henrique Alves (NOAA), Keven Blackman (Raytheon), and Christopher Domanti (Raytheon), teamed up to give an overview of the EPIC Program. Through four iterations of their presentation, the team saw many new faces and answered a broad range of questions on the future of the program. The team supported two well-attended Town Halls on NOAA’s Unified Forecast System Research to Operations Project and the NOAA/Unified Forecast System Modeling Forum. The team and the UFS were also well represented in 11 different sessions that highlighted various aspects of the UFS.

We would like to thank members of the EPIC Team for their contributions at AGU:

  • EPIC Workshop: Dr. Mark Potts, Dr. Natalie Perlin, Dr. Yi-Cheng Teng, Mandy Parson, Jessica Wheeler, and Edward Snyder.
  • EPIC Presentations: Dr. Jong Kim and Dr. Stelios Flampouris
  • EPIC Town Halls: Dr. Maoyi Huang and Dr. Jose-Henrique Alves
  • NOAA Booth Presentations: Dr. Jose-Henrique Alves, Keven Blackman, and Chris Domanti

This was EPIC’s first time at the annual AGU Fall Meeting and was considered an all-around success in engaging the community in new ways! The team is looking forward to our next big event, the 103rd American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting, as well as a return to the annual AGU Fall Meeting next year!
